“This was the place I said goodbye to you. I remember here, when I found out you were sick and how we left your ashes where you loved to be most. A fishing peg, at your favourite place. We put our feet in there. We laughed when Ciara was sure she felt a fish stake a nibble of her feet and she sqeaked! We were sure it was you. A wind-up to let us know you were okay.
It feels like at one point in life everything should be okay but the truth is I’ll always be changed. I knew it from the day you died and it’s true now. Nothing will quite ever be the way it was, and strangely that’s the way it’s supposed to be...? I wish it wasn’t such a sad place - to come to accept losing someone. I wish there was a magic thing that could let us feel okay with losing them. But really it will never ever be… ‘right’
In this piece I was also seeking forgiveness. I am so sorry. I want to be forgiven for some of the things I did and said that I could’ve done better. Our relationship was scary, ultimately. And I was afraid all the time that you would hurt me in some way. And shielding myself from that pain I felt that I missed out on the potential for our relationship to be good.
On reflection I definitely see how my self preservation led to my dad and I being more gentle with each other in the long run... Although I lost him, just as we were beginning to cultivate a real friendship again, I don’t think we would’ve cultivated anything if I had let things carry on, the way they were before that. So I’m happy we had our disagreements, arguments, hang-up phone calls and angry moments. Because eventually we met each other again, as better, more forgiving people.
I’m glad I got to know that part of you.”
