“The very first piece in the Water Stories collection; the one that began them all.
No.1 Barely There was created at the height of the second mental health crisis in my life. It was a means of survival and release. The process became moments of catharsis, each mark smeared with a bare finger, in a raw and submerged reflection of fragility and endurance. I didn’t expect to be taken over the way I was, by this.A closer look will reveal the underlying anger in what appears to be a soft and slow motion wasting away. A sense of lifting the viewer up, toward the light, though if you were to really think about the angle, these beautiful creatures; ‘manta’ meaning ‘blanket’ in Spanish, were swimming away. That protection, leaving. Slowly and painfully.
But continue, you must - to rise up. Throughout everything and anything that happens, we’re actually doing it together at least. We’re all going forward, each of us marked by our experiences, imperfect. What emerged from my own darkness is not just a single artwork, but the spark of something greater: the realisation that beauty, healing, and connection is in the going away - and then the rising up again.
This piece marks the point where pain and loss transforms into purpose. ”

“No.2 Don’t look is about potential. I feel this painting every time I surface from depression and get the gulp of ‘you’re worth it’ and ‘you’re enough’. Feeling not good enough, or rejected at a level of family can make simply being yourself exceptionally difficult around anyone. While creating this I was feeling deeply about what I have personally endured. It looks at the reality that we actually shine, and very brightly - that is, when you’re turned on by whatever turns you on. Perhaps I am a superb, vivid, alive creature with all the glowing potential in the world.
It’s a shame that feeling good, and showing it, also causes you to shrink again. It causes us to pull back, be embarressed, fit in. You become smaller again; a deliberate choice in size of this piece was made to show this in one way, and that your field of connection also grows smaller. You don’t fit into the version of yourself you’ve been portraying anymore.
This piece is a reminder that the glossy, vivacious version of each of us is in there - and as you do uncover yourself, you may also scream to be covered up. What if they judge? Well, they may not speak to you, or fuck you off entirely, actually.
That is a good thing, although finding a place within yourself where this is okay is so difficult. We’re mammals driven by connection, after all. But the others like you are out there, it’s just a tinier home. ”- Karlee Hankin

“No.3 I get to decide is a bold exploration of stopping others in their overstep and choosing for the self. Making the conscious decision to say no. Making a deliberate choice to trust your own mind and express that you don’t want something. It’s about listening to your own code, your own inspiration.
In the throws of my life, because I am creative, I have had others frequently tell me what I should be doing. It’s not uncommon for creatives, as it’s a fluctuating career branch that points to being poor and struggling - very untrue in itself, but not to digress. People tend to offer unsolicited advice because you’re not doing things the way they think you could be. Or they way they would. To my shame, and pleasing tendencies, I have followed plenty of this advice when I have not resonated with it, sometimes for years, trying to make some sort of living and to please others.
When I follow this path I’m actively circling the drain - mentally, so to speak. I break out of it from time to time. But I know I need that space. To create, to express the way I need to. I don’t make art because it’s just nice. I make it because I have to. Like many, I’ve held my tongue when being told what I must do because being perceived as a difficult (female) artist would be such a terrible crime.
This work was a meditative practice on perceived control, perfectionism and thinking about my responsibilities. I wanted to hone in on the sense of what I want and need in an artwork. Not for anything, not to be manipulated or controlled in any way to make money - it exists only to be itself. We need reminding of that sentiment throughout society, in my opinion. Some might say it’s not finished, but they would be absolutely wrong. Its future is still ahead, wild and undone, but it is perfect just as it is. It doesn't need to be complete to be complete.For the record, I fucking hate being told what to do.”

“No.4 Make a wish carries a high sense of grief, but within each of the rays is a token of hope that all of us carry. That potential is emerging, despite it all. Each of the rays carries a story of their own, amongst peers. They have potential in the form of a star - all expressing themselves very differently, in the same space. The reds scarring downward in the wake of the swim, delivers how each of them express, and how those expressions might affect others. I was thinking a great deal about those closest to us, and the repetition of family stories / cycles. The stage at which we deliver ourselves from them, essentially.
I feel the colours successfully captured that underwater mixture of superb dark green and yellow-green plant life in bodies of water I’ve visited (and starred at), around the UK. The mixture of serenity overcoming the overwhelm is apparent - which makes me very happy in imagining the end of their story.”

I think of it as (1000 ah-ha!s) x (1000 wahoo!s)
No rules, no one to answer to, mistakes are more than welcome and the world goes on in a no-holds-barred fashion. Each of the rays is a chaotic, messy being - but isn’t that a wonderful idea? The way I wonder if that’s the way life is meant to be.
I can imagine the whole sea is just lit up with the desires of the rays, bold and entirely cerulean! ”
Update: “I unpacked this piece and it asked more of me. It felt undone and unfinished. It’s the only artwork where I was certain I’d have to change it to be happy with it in this collection. The result is greener with an even bolder background.”- Karlee Hankin

“No.6 Four is your favourite was a surprise. I didn't have a plan for this work but I knew I had a held feeling.What I thought would be more experimental compared to my other pieces ended up being one of the most emotional pieces I've worked on. After I finished this, I had a moment to step back and look at the comp, when it hit me like a ton of bricks.
It felt exactly like the relationship I had with my father before he passed. It has so much in it that I cannot say out loud in something as simple as words. I was surprised to see that it carries the whole spectrum of emotions I felt throughout our life together - including fun, which I'm happy to say I remembered more fully having completed this work and will explore much more of.
It reminded me that he used to call me Bubbles. It reminded me that I used to call him ‘Daddy Pops’. He used to say ‘Karlee Pops’ back to that nickname. I remembered four was his favourite number, after realising this was number six. After making this I feel like I'm really feeling the grief well - more wholly. I hope so much that it does the same for someone else.”

“This is No.7 Lucky. In the sense of where this work is taking the manta rays, the stars are beginning to come away from their body and fly amongst each other - a symbol of just breaking free of some of that chained up heavy experience. It shows that there’s a part of grief worth absolutely cherishing. Worth really leaning into. It’s this part you can’t see coming. The bit where you remember all the good stuff for just a moment and forget all of the bad stuff. Wild, playful and a little silly. Reminiscent of a time when pure discovery was happening as a kid.
Losing a parent is traumatic to the point where you question everything you thought you knew. This painting was about dropping the questions, even for a moment, and going for a swim in deluded bliss in beautiful, fun memories. Whilst making this piece I felt that my spirit ran free a little, lost in a literal dance for the most part.
I was listening to ‘She’s like a rainbow’ by The Rolling Stones while I made every minute of it. It’s a song my dad used to say reminded him of me. I love this song. I love the primary school feeling that the music gives. I love the unapologetic leaning into fabulous joy. I really wanted to reflect how special and sparky and crazy and silly my dad could be. It also reminded me how we could be together, in that state. The end of the song, where it gets all wonky, is a real reflection in this work. The parts that are still wonderful, even though completely imperfect.
The type of blue I’ve used is extremely strong in colour; a very pure pigment. Fully saturated, charged. I think my dad had ADHD and suffered cPTSD. He was extremely gifted and so much fun. He had the side to him that was electric with joy. Unfortunately, when he was sad or angry, he was also electric. I see a lot of similarities within us and I think this image captures what we had in common, and some of the parts we don’t. Either way it’s a beautiful dance, I managed to capture and suspend.”

“ No.8 and 9 Lighter is a very obvious separation peace. Like a single reality split into two. The colours, compared to the last piece, tell the story of how death really feels.
There is the strange lightness after they pass. When you see a parent in so much pain, they’re passing is the only thing left they can do to ease it. And you kind of want it for them.
I’ve said for some time there is this honour about being by someone’s side whilst they’re going through their last days. It’s a privilege, and should not be treated lightly. This is a very touchy subject around my father’s death, because he had a lot of people that loved and cared for him. And a lot of people that felt they were pushed aside, including myself.
Loss is made harder by people who go inwards and become selfish and destructive. The sheer amount of badmouthing and spiteful, nasty talk at that time was intolerable. A lingering heaviness you don’t want around during someone’s last days.
At one point I felt at fault. But I don’t think it’s my fault anymore. I think if I did, this piece would be in about four or five pieces. This piece was about really honouring the separation between my father and myself, and thinking at length about the separation between my sister and I.
At one point I was all for a reconciliation, because I recognised the pain she was in and why she was so angry. But I don’t feel that way anymore. I feel like I wasn't afforded any grace to cope in my own way - the only way I knew how. And that some things (and people) are better off apart.”

“No.10 Self portrait was a wild card entry into this collection. Every once in a while it’s a very good idea to do a self portrait. It’s rather a diary entry. However, I made this one off the back of my Cousin sending me an old Christmas image of us, when we were both teeny and had cracker hats on. I loved how the spikey soft yellow hat looked around my little face with the eyes popping out of the blurry image. I felt I’d always had a wrap around my mouth, looking at it. My own voice is not really there. The feeling I was asking for too much attention from my parents came to mind too. I felt like I couldn't get things ‘right’, no matter how hard I tried, and it was a repeating theme I just did not understand, even to this day. I thought about how I’d take a different kind of care of her if I had the chance. I’d teach her things I wasn’t taught.
And the fact is, I have had that chance. I find that looking at her, that I love her. And I want her to feel perfect, just as she is. Safe. Don’t change tiny Kar, be weird, ask all the questions, you’re allowed attention. You can say ‘no’ whenever you like. You don’t have to put up with abusive situations or relationships because you’re a responsible person. You don’t have to sustain anyone else, but you. It’s not your responsibility to please and it’s impossible to be someone they hope you’ll be. I so badly want her to know all those things from that age. I poured my current self into that portrait so she feels what I feel for her now. I think self love is something we’ll all struggle with. But it’s time to get over it and start doing it.”- Karlee Hankin
